On-site Installation of Mineral Processing Equipment in Africa
Thousands of miles away from China, a series of precision installation battles are underway on the African continent. From the rainforests of Ghana to the high-altitude mining areas of Angola, Chinese technicians, with millimeter-level craftsmanship, are steadily installing massive “Made in China” equipment in overseas mines.
At a gold mine project site in Ghana, a ball mill with a diameter of 8.2 meters and a length of 12.7 meters is being installed—this is the largest ball mill exported by my country overseas, weighing over 1200 tons. Faced with the stringent requirement of controlling the alignment deviation between the tens-of-tons-heavy cylinder and the large gear to within millimeters, the project team established a special installation group and applied 3D technology to simulate the installation process. Technicians repeatedly fine-tuned the levelness of the main bearing base plate under 41°C temperatures, ultimately controlling the accuracy to within 0.6 millimeters, less than half the thickness of a coin. After more than 100 days of hard work, the main equipment was hoisted 16 days ahead of schedule, demonstrating the installation precision of Chinese equipment.
At the Tetelo copper mine in Angola, the installation team faced similarly severe challenges. Due to limited on-site lifting capacity, the 145-ton semi-autogenous mill adopted a “split-piece hoisting and on-site assembly” solution. Addressing the challenge of installing ball mill liners, the team independently developed a “sliding trolley + detachable track” tooling, reducing the traditional 6-8 person workload to 2-3 people, completing the installation of 350 liners in 5 days, improving efficiency by over 50%. From the jaw crusher in the primary crushing workshop to the 58 flotation machines in the beneficiation workshop, thousands of pieces of equipment were installed, commissioned, and successfully started producing ore within 6 months.
“Installation and commissioning are crucial links in the overall beneficiation plant service, directly affecting achieving production targets,” as the on-site engineer stated. From leveling the bearing housing base plate to assembling the motor stator and rotor with a 2mm gap, every detail determines the operating efficiency of the production line. Chinese technicians not only brought advanced equipment but also spread the spirit of craftsmanship along the “Belt and Road,” contributing Chinese wisdom to the global mining industry.
