A spiral concentrator is a simple gravity separation device with no moving parts. It consists of a narrow, elongated trough spiraling around a vertical axis. The trough cross-section is elliptical, and a collector is installed inside to collect the concentrate. It utilizes the inertial centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the slurry to separate light and heavy minerals on the trough surface, which are then continuously discharged separately.

Spiral Concentrator

The working principle of the spiral concentrator is based on two types of motion of the slurry flow on the spiral surface: tangential circulation and transverse circulation. The upper layer of water flows at a high velocity, with a large centrifugal force, and is pushed to the outer edge; the lower layer of water flows at a slower velocity, and under the influence of gravity, flows to the inner edge along the transverse cross-section, forming transverse circulation. This transverse circulation pushes the light gangue floating in the upper layer to the outer edge as tailings, while simultaneously pushing the heavy minerals in the lower layer to the inner edge as concentrate, significantly improving the separation efficiency.

This equipment is suitable for processing mineral sands with low mud content. The optimal feed particle size is 0.1-2 mm, and the lower limit of particle size recovery can be below 0.04 mm. Test results of the new spiral concentrator show that, under similar feed and concentrate grades, it can improve the roughing recovery rate by more than 8%. It also boasts advantages such as large processing capacity, no need for additional washing water, small footprint, and simplified process, making it a relatively ideal roughing equipment.
